Photo-digital illustrating – Forrest Smyth
Tuesday, 10 June, The Arts Centre, 61-69 Abel Smith Street, 7.30pm
Forrest is a photographer and photo-digital illustrator producing images for advertising and corporate communications. Though he shoots a mix of digital and film, his photographic sensibilities have been very much shaped by his extensive background in good old-fashioned silver-halide.
As well as digital technology, Forrest uses a range of photographic techniques in his work, including light painting (using a special high intensity fibre-optic light source to literally “paint” with light), and he’s certainly not averse to using some extremely low-tech methods when appropriate!
Forrest believes that creating good images should always be more important than the technology used to “capture” those images. He believes the things that make a great image - composition, lighting, simplicity, timing – are as valid today as they were in Cartier-Bresson’s day, and any technique or technology should be secondary to the image itself, and not merely used for its own sake.
Come along to the meeting to find out more about Forrest and the various techniques he uses in his photography.
