A Capital Suburb: Pipitea Thorndon
5 April - 19 July 2008, National Library Gallery, corner of Aitken & Molesworth Sts
A new exhibition explores the history of the suburb at the heart of New Zealand's capital. Photographs, works of art and documents reveal its special character and diversity.
A selection of panoramic photographs shows the progress of Thorndon from beach settlement to thriving city suburb. An album of photographs from the 1860s gives a glimpse of family life and the social networks in the young colony.
Photographs by John Pascoe document events in the years of the Second World War, and two works by photographer Robin Morrison catch the moment in the 1970s when Thorndon began to recover from urban blight and the ravages of motorway development.
